Crocodile known as Michael Jackson shot after fisherman killed in front of wife in NT

A fisherman has been killed by a crocodile in the Northern Territory after wading into a river to unsnag his line.

The 57-year-old man’s wife looked on as he was attacked at the Adelaide River, about 60 kilometres from Darwin, on Monday afternoon.

Police say the man's wife ran for help after seeing her husband taken by a crocodile.

"He was there with his wife and he was fishing on the water's edge," NT Police Superintendent Jo Foley said.

"She left the scene because she saw this happen."

Police and wildlife officers searched the river using multiple boats, and located and shot a 4.5-metre crocodile known as 'Michael Jackson' a few hours later.

The man's body was recovered late on Monday night.

Adelaide River is a well-known crocodile hot spot where tourists watch the huge reptiles propel their bodies from the water to seize dangled hunks of meat.

The man was taken 100 metres from where the jumping crocodile tourist boats embark.

There are signs in the area warning that crocodiles are present and dangerous.

Operations manager at St John Ambulance Craig Garraway said staff were called and treated the man's wife for shock but she wanted to remain at the scene.
