I did it for Love- Female Drug Pusher

Really?

33-year-old Senegalese woman arrested with drugs
A 33-years-old Senegalese woman, Kamara Oumou, has been arrested for drug trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officials at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Oumou was arrested while attempting to board an Arik flight to Dakar. She was arrested with the international passport number 400680371.

In her confessional statement, Oumou said that she smuggled the illicit drug because she loved her Nigerian boyfriend.

In a statement signed by the Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the suspect was found in possession of 680 grammes of narcotic that tested positive for heroin and cocaine.

According to the statement, the suspect used industrial tape in sticking three parcels of cocaine weighing 515 grammes on her waist, while six wraps of heroin weighing 165 grammes were inserted in her private parts.
Ofoyeju stressed that the drugs were carefully concealed by the suspect, but not intelligent done enough to escape detection by NDLEA officials.

He, however, said unlike most drug couriers who smuggle drugs for money, Oumou shocked her investigators when she confessed that she smuggled the drugs because she loved her boyfriend.
The suspect was quoted as saying: “How can I ask my boyfriend to pay me? I smuggled the drugs for the love I have for my Nigerian boyfriend.”

Ofoyeju said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect and her boyfriend, who she simply identified as Hakeem, met in Dakar where the boyfriend had lived for 11 years.

Their relationship lasted only six months before Hakeem left Dakar in December 2012.

Oluwole Awolowo: Tribute by Tribune Newspaper

Chief Obafemi Awolowo's heir Oluwole Awolowo is dead. Below is a tribute to him by the Tribune Newspaper

Oluwole Awolowo: 1942 - 2013

Born at Ibadan on the 3rd day of December, 1942 into the illustrous family of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He was the third child and second son of Papa Obafemi Awolowo and Mama Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.  He grew up among his peers without any elitist trait.  He never discriminated against friends and relations who knew him as “UNBREAKABLE,” a sobriquet given to him by Papa Awolowo himself for his tenacity of purpose.

His contemporaries always described him in the superlatives as kind, considerate, compassionate and diligent.  Studious and enthusiastic in sports, his main forte was the game of soccer.
From Ibadan Grammar School, he proceeded to Leighton Park School, Reading, Berdshire, England for further studies.  He was admitted into the famous Leeds College of Commerce where he graduated in Business Studies in the early sixties.

After sojourning abroad successfully he returned to Nigeria when the inclement clouds were gathering on the Action Group party and his revered father was unjustly being buffeted by the perfidious political turbulence of that era.  Making a virtue of the necessity, Oluwole took his destiny in his own hands and set to work with several organizations at the middle level managerial cadre at the Nigerian Tobacco Company, Ibadan, the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation and the Nigerian Television Service, Lagos.  Having acquired experience in the public service, his entrepreneurial spirit propelled him into the business of transportation, petroleum products dealership and estate management and eevelopment among others.

In keeping with the title ‘UNBREAKABLE” given to him by his visionary father, the responsibility of manning the family forte fell squarely on his young shoulders when his father was incarcerated and his beloved elder brother and lawyer, Segun Awolowo, passed on in 1963.  Those were the difficult times that tried men’s souls; but in spite of the gloom that enveloped the Awolowo family, he still managed to remain UNBREAKABLE.

This was when he became very active in politics.  He joined the UPGA and effectively participated in the successful election of Chief TOS Benson as an Independent United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA) in 1964.
With the emergence of the military on Nigeria’s political landscape in 1966, he veered away completely from politics to active full-time business.

Apart from transportation, petroleum products dealership and estate development, he was also a director of Dideolu Stores Limited, Sopolu Investment Ltd, amongst others.

As a committed welfarist, he always regarded service to the generality of the masses as of primary importance.  He said in an interview – “For me, politics has always been a subject concerned not with theory but primarrily with human beings, what service one can render to alleviate their sufferings.”

He won his first elective office in 1975 as a Councilor representing Apapa in the then Lagos City Council.  For discharging his responsibilities creditably in various city council committees, he had virtually no rival when the time came in 1979 to pick a UPN candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly to represent Apapa Constituency.  He won a landslide victory and remained a Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly till 1983 when the military came calling the second time in the chequered history of Nigeria.

A successful parliamentarian, he had a reputation as a smart political operator.  With a high sense of responsibility and unusual capacity for hard work and vigour which are the hallmark of the Awolowo family, he was able to head several legislative committees on Environment, Education and Health.

He led the delegations that visited UK, Canada and USA on special assignments.  Little wonder why a famous Nigerian politician remarked that “Wole is the best politician in the Awolowo family”.
When in 1984, the Board of the African Newspapers of Nigeria Plc appointed him Publisher/Vice Chairman of the Tribune titles, a position which he held till death; he took up the responsibility with his characteristic legendary sense of duty.

As he became the Publisher, he said “I am not really interested in sitting for hours in office doing paper work. But rather, to put in place strategies that would encourage all staffers, from the managing director to the cleaners to see themselves rather as one family, who are joint owners of the business, than employees.
His style of leadership by example, predicated on his characteristic sense of duty, brought love, direction, discipline, unity, loyalty, positive progress, service and propriety to the Tribune family.  An unbreakable heritage.

For his relentless humanitarian services to various communities, he was rewarded with many chieftaincy titles among which are – The Ajiroba of Ota, Lagos State; the Sobaloju of Ijanikin, Lagos State; the Bobajiro of Isolo, Lagos State, the Odofin of Owo, Ondo State; the Ogboye of Ijeun, Abeokuta. He was also a member of several organizations and societies like the Island Club of Lagos, Founder and first President of Doma Club, Lagos, Apapa Club, Abeokuta Sports Club, Special Marshall Road Safety Commission.  He was 2nd Vice President, Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) between 1984 and 1986.  A member of International Press Institute, Vienna, Austria, Patron, NUJ and several philanthropic organizations.

Poem: Oga At the Top

Oga At the Top
By Abdulkabir Olatunji

My Oga at the top
You told me to never give up
This life is chop-I-chop
And if I ever flop
I should never stop
Chop till you drop
They say you are corrupt
Morally bankrupt
Like a bad cop
They forget it was an hiccup
Being interviewed is not a tea cup
They flip-flop
As if it is Hip-Hop
But I say; keep it up
Because it is you at the top
Your shine cannot stop
You are on top
Like top of the pops
All hail my one and only
Oga at the top

The Forbes rich list for 2013 is out...

Inside The 2013 Billionaires List: Facts and Figures

The ranks of the world’s billionaires, as monitored and tallied by our global wealth team, have yet again reached all-time highs. The 2013 Forbes Billionaires list now boasts 1,426 names, with an aggregate net worth of $5.4 trillion, up from $4.6 trillion. We found 210 new ten-figure fortunes. Once again the U.S. leads the list with 442 billionaires, followed by Asia-Pacific (386), Europe (366), the Americas (129) and the Middle East & Africa (103).

Resurgent asset prices are the driving force behind the rising wealth of the super-rich around the globe. While last year almost as many fortunes fell as rose, this year gainers outnumbered losers by 4-to-1. Many new names made the list thanks to free-spending consumers. To name a few: Diesel jeans mogul Renzo Rosso at $3 billion, retailer Bruce Nordstrom at $1.2 billion and designer Tory Burch at $1 billion.

Carlos Slim is once again the world’s richest person, followed by Bill Gates. Amancio Ortega of Spanish retailer Zara moves up to No. 3 for the first time. He is the year’s biggest gainer, adding $19.5 billion to his fortune in one year. He moves ahead of Warren Buffett, despite the fact that the U.S. investing legend added $9.5 billion to his fortune. This is the first year since 2000 that Buffett has not been among the top 3. The year’s biggest loser is Brazilian Eike Batista, whose fortune dropped by $19.4 billion, or equivalent to about $50 million a day. His rank falls from no. 7 to no. 100 in the world.

Baby Cured of HIV Infection in the United States After Early Treatment

It seems a cure for HIV/AIDS may not be as distant as it seemed a few years ago...

U.S. Baby’s HIV Infection Cured Through Very Early Treatment

The child’s story is the first account of an infant achieving a so-called functional cure, a rare event in which a person achieves remission without the need for drugs and standard blood tests show no signs that the virus is making copies of itself.

More testing needs to be done to see if the treatment would have the same effect on other children, but the results could change the way high-risk babies are treated and possibly lead to a cure for children with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

“This is a proof of concept that HIV can be potentially curable in infants,” said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who presented the findings at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.

The child’s story is different from the now famous case of Timothy Ray Brown, the so-called “Berlin patient,” whose HIV infection was completely eradicated through an elaborate treatment for leukemia in 2007 that involved the destruction of his immune system and a stem cell transplant from a donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection.

“We believe this is our Timothy Brown case to spur research interest toward a cure for HIV infection in children,” Persaud said at a news conference.

Instead of Brown’s costly treatment, however, the case of the Mississippi baby, who was not identified, involved the use of a cocktail of widely available drugs already used to treat HIV infection in infants.
When the baby girl was born in a rural hospital in July 2010, her mother had just tested positive for HIV infection. Because her mother had not received any prenatal HIV treatment, doctors knew the child was at high risk of infection. They transferred her to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she came under the care of Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist.

Because of her risk, Dr. Gay put the infant on a cocktail of three HIV-fighting drugs – zidovudine (also known as AZT), lamivudine, and nevirapine – when she was just 30 hours old. Two blood tests done within the first 48 hours of the child’s life confirmed her infection and she was kept on the full treatment regimen, Persaud told reporters at the conference.

In more typical pregnancies, when an HIV-infected mother has been given drugs to reduce the risk of transmission to her child, the baby would only have been given a single drug, nevirapine.

Researchers believe use of the more aggressive antiretroviral treatment when the child was just days old likely resulted in her cure by keeping the virus from forming hard-to-treat pools of cells known as viral reservoirs, which lie dormant and out of the reach of standard medications. These reservoirs rekindle HIV infection in patients who stop therapy, and they are the reason most HIV-infected individuals need lifelong treatment to keep the infection at bay.

10-MONTH GAP
After starting on treatment, the baby’s immune system responded and tests showed diminishing levels of the virus until it was undetectable 29 days after birth. The baby received regular treatment for 18 months, but then stopped coming to appointments for a period of about 10 months, when her mother said she was not given any treatment. The doctors did not say why the mother stopped coming.

When the child came back under the care of Dr. Gay, she ordered standard blood tests to see how the child was faring before resuming antiviral therapy.

What she found was surprising. The first blood test did not turn up any detectible levels of HIV. Neither did the second. And tests for HIV-specific antibodies, the standard clinical indicator of HIV infection, also remained negative.

“At that point, I knew I was dealing with a very unusual case,” Dr. Gay said.
Baffled, Dr. Gay turned to her friend and longtime colleague, Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga of the University of Massachusetts, and she and Persaud did a series of sophisticated lab tests on the child’s blood.
The first looked for silent reservoirs of the virus where it remains dormant but can replicate if activated. That is detected in a type of immune cell known as a CD4 T-cell. After culturing the child’s cells, they found no sign of the virus.

Then, the team looked for HIV DNA, which indicates that the virus has integrated itself into the genetic material of the infected person. This test turned up such low levels that it was just above the limit of the test’s ability to detect it.

The third test looked for bits of genetic material known as viral RNA. They only found a single copy of viral RNA in one of the two tests they ran.
Because there is no detectible virus in the child’s blood, the team has advised that she not be given antiretroviral therapy, whose goal is to block the virus from replicating in the blood. Instead, she will be monitored closely.

There are no samples that can be used by other researchers to confirm the findings, which may lead skeptics to challenge how the doctors know for sure that the child was infected.

Persaud said the team is trying to use the tiny scraps of viral genetic material they have been able to gather from the child to compare with the mother’s infection, to confirm that the child’s infection came from her mother. But, she stressed, the baby had tested positive in two separate blood tests, and there had been evidence of the virus replicating in her blood, which are standard methods of confirming HIV infection.
