Teenager Arrested in the US for Wearing Pro-Gun Rights T-Shirt

This is a little bit over the top in my opinion...

14-Year-Old Arrested for Pro-Gun Rights Shirt Faces Jail Time

An 8th-grader in West Virginia was suspended in late April for wearing a pro-gun rights t-shirt to school, then arrested when the police officer called in to suppress the young man's right to free speech determined that he was not complying with his order to "stop talking." 14-year-old Jared Marcum faces a $500 fine and a maximum of one year in prison for the charge of "obstructing an officer." For the record, Marcum's obstruction was, quite literally, continuing to talk after Officer James Adkins ordered him to stop doing so. Adkins also claimed, after the fact, that Marcum made "terrorist threats" (wow...just wow), but nothing in legal documents delivered to the court indicate this in any way, shape or form.

The boy's father, Allen Lardieri, noted, "Me, I'm more of a fighter and so is Jared and eventually we're going to get through this. I don't think it should have ever gotten this far." He added, "Every aspect of this is just totally wrong. He has no background of anything criminal until now and it just seems like nobody wants to admit they're wrong." Marcum's suspension also came under questionable circumstances. Recounting his run-in with a teacher, Marcum noted, "She said, 'Are you supposed to wear that in school?' I said, 'I don't see why I shouldn't.'" Also for the record, there is no rule in Marcum's school against a t-shirt like that which he was wearing.

In fact, when Marcum returned from his one-day suspension, he wore exactly the same shirt to make a point. Many other students in his class wore similar t-shirts, and none of them, including Marcum, were suspended or disciplined in any way. "In my view of the facts, Jared didn't do anything wrong," Ben White, Marcum's attorney, noted. "I think Officer Adkins could have done something differently." That the police were involved at all is a joke. That Marcum was arrested is a disgrace. That teachers, police and other "authority" figures are making up their own rules as they go along is downright scary.

Nigeria Insists on Death Penalty and Anti-Gay Law

Nice one from the Federal Government, it is very annoying to see the way the West seeks to impose its decadent values on the rest of the world...

No going back on death penalty, anti gay bill – FG

The Federal Government has rejected the recommendation by the United Nations Human Rights Council on the protection of same sex marriage and the abolition of death penalty.

This was contained in a draft report to the United Nations Human Rights Council on resolution 16/20 discussed at a Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on the second cycle of Nigeria’s Universal Periodic Review in Abuja on Friday. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, stated that same sex marriage was against the tradition and customs of the nation, so it could not be imposed on the country by external forces. Ashiru who expressed shock why gay rights had generated interest from the United Nations, queried the negative campaign against polygamy, which, according to him, was allowed in African tradition.

He said, “You should not shy away from defending what you believe is right. Whatever is in our constitution, you must defend it. We must stand by our constitution. We must stand by our customs and tradition. “If you want to have gay right in your constitution; fine, but we have our own constitution. The same human rights they want to protect for gay people; how about people who want to go into polygamy if they so desire and women are willing to marry them. Polygamy is human rights in our tradition.”

On the abolition of death penalty, the Minister said Nigeria should not be blamed becausethe Criminal Code in use was enacted by the colonial masters, saying, “If anything is wrong
about it, why are they blaming us?”

Ashiru also denied allegations of extra-judicial killings by the military against the Boko Haram insurgents in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, where emergency rule had been proclaimed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

How to trap a rat

Rats are one of the most hated and burdensome pests known to man. They steal our food, urinate and defecate in it. They even eat vital documents and nibble at us too if given the opportunity.

Perhaps, most importantly, they spread diseases like the deadly Lassa fever which has become common in recent times in Nigeria.

I frequently trap and sometimes outrightly kill rats in my home.

I reckon the killing part might be difficult to achieve for many. Hence, I will talk about trapping rats.

First, you get a mouse glue trap popularly called 'story book' in Nigeria.

Secondly, carefully observe the food that the rat(s) eat the most- dry fish, bread or in my case kulikuli. In addition, try and observe the rat(s) especially at night, they tend to have favourite spots as well as defined pathways.

To trap the rat(s), open your mouse trap, add some of their favourite food to it. The mouse glue trap is preferred here because you do not risk injury to yourself and other people by getting your fingers or toes caught like the conventional traps.

After placing food on the trap, place it on the previously identified pathway that the rat(s) use. Place an heavy object on one of the trap's edges. To ensure that there is no daring escape by the rat once caught.

All you need to do now is wait.

If after trying for 3 nights you do not succeed in catching a rat. Review the entire process and select new food and pathway.

Before long, you are likely to catch a rat.

Let me know how well you fare in your quest to catch a rat by dropping a comment below.

Two-headed Turtle Born in San Antonio Zoo

A wonder is born!

Two-headed turtle born at Texas zoo

A TWO-headed turtle has hatched at the San Antonio Zoo in Texas and officials have named her Thelma and Louise.

The female Texas cooter arrived on June 18 and will go on display today at the zoo’s Friedrich Aquarium.
Zoo spokeswoman Debbie Rios-Vanskike said that the two-headed turtle appears healthy and is able to swim and walk.

She says experts at the zoo don’t foresee any health issues for Thelma and Louise, named for the female duo in the 1991 Oscar-winning road film of the same name.

The San Antonio Zoo is no stranger to two-headed reptiles. The facility was home to a two-headed Texas rat snake named Janus from 1978 until the creature’s death to 1995.

Earlier in June, a kitten was born in Oregon with two faces, but died after two days.

Chinese Factory Workers Release Boss After Holding Him Hostage for a Week

This news feels like a movie...

Chinese factory workers free US boss after week in captivity

Chinese factory workers have released their US boss, held captive for a week, after a compensation dispute was resolved, a company official and union representative said.

Chip Starnes, the president of Specialty Medical Supplies, located in the Beijing suburb of Huairou, was allowed to leave the factory and was resting in a hotel, the company official said.

The workers had demanded severance packages identical to those offered to 30 employees who were recently laid off, even though the firm planned no further layoffs, Starnes said earlier.

"The mass labour dispute incident for this unit has been resolved," said Chu Lixian, head of the rights and interests department of the Huairou District Labour Union.

"Both sides have come to an agreement through joint efforts made by Mr Starnes and the workers' side. The results have turned out to be satisfactory."

The workers' demands followed rumours that the entire plant was being closed after the company's plastic injection moulding division began a move to India to lower production costs.

"As of now my boss Chip feels exhausted after two harsh days and has gone back to a hotel, OK?"

Specialty Medical's general manager Xing Shuang told Reuters Television. "This is all I have to say."

Starnes spent the week inside the plant, which produces alcohol pads and plastic blood lancets for diabetics, behind barred windows. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

The standoff highlighted one of the lesser-known risks of doing business in China – that trust between workers and management and faith in the legal system is often low.

Starnes, whose company is based in Florida, flew to China on 18 June and his detention started on Friday.

Nelson Mandela is Still "There"

I really doubt there has been so much attention paid to the health of a single individual like that being given to Nelson Mandela's health status...

Daughter says Mandela "still there", raps media "vultures'

Former South African President Nelson Mandela is still clinging to life, his eldest daughter Makaziwe said on Thursday, but she criticised foreign media "vultures" for violating his privacy as he lay critically ill in hospital.

Makaziwe's outburst came as anxiety increased over the faltering health of the frail 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero, admired across the world as a symbol of resistance against injustice and of racial reconciliation.

Late on Wednesday, President Jacob Zuma's government reported a downturn in Mandela's condition after nearly three weeks of treatment in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection.

This forced Zuma to cancel his participation in a regional summit in neighbouring Mozambique on Thursday.

But Zuma paid a second visit in 24 hours to Mandela on Thursday and was told by his doctors he had improved overnight.

"He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night. The medical team continues to do a sterling job," Zuma said in a statement released by his office. The presidency said Mandela remains "critical but is now stable".

"I won't lie, it doesn't look good," Mandela's daughter Makaziwe told state broadcaster SABC after visiting her father.

"But as I say, if we speak to him, he responds and tries to open his eyes. He's still there".

Accompanied by a group of grandchildren, she angrily criticised the "bad taste" of foreign media she said were intruding on the privacy of her father and his family.

"There's sort of a racist element with many of the foreign media, where they just cross boundaries," she said, after running the gauntlet of the pack of camera crews and reporters gathered outside the hospital.

"It's truly like vultures waiting when the lion has devoured the buffalo, waiting there for the last of the carcass. That's the image we have as a family," Makaziwe added.

Her criticism followed several sharp rebukes from Zuma's spokesman against some foreign media reports that have given alarming details of Mandela's deteriorating condition.

Spokesman Mac Maharaj declined to comment on the latest report by a major U.S. TV news network that South Africa's first black president was on life support. He said this was part of Mandela's confidential relationship with his doctors.

Daughter Makaziwe said: "If people say they really care about Nelson Mandela, then they should respect that. They should respect that there is a part of him that has to be respected."

She compared the massive media attention on Mandela, who has been in and out of hospital in the last few months with a recurring lung infection, with the coverage of the death in April of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

"We don't mind the interest but I just feel it has gone overboard. When Margaret Thatcher was sick in hospital, I didn't see this kind of media frenzy around Margaret Thatcher," she said. "It is only God who knows when the time to go is."

OBAMA SAYS MANDELA "PERSONAL HERO"

Mandela's fourth hospitalisation in six months has forced a growing realisation among South Africans that the man regarded as the father of their post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation" will not be among them forever.

"Mandela is very old and at that age, life is not good. I just pray that God takes him this time. He must go. He must rest," said Ida Mashego, a 60-year-old office cleaner in Johannesburg's Sandton financial district.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who is due to visit South Africa this weekend, said his thoughts and prayers were with the Mandela family and South Africans.

Speaking in Senegal, his first stop on a three-nation African tour, Obama said Mandela was a "personal hero" of his.

"Even if he passes on, his legacy will linger on," Obama said. He confirmed he still planned to travel to South Africa in the coming days, in response to speculation he might re-schedule his trip because of Mandela's deteriorating health.

Mandela is revered for his lifetime of opposition to the system of race-based apartheid rule imposed by the white minority government that sentenced him to 27 years in jail, more than half of them on the notorious Robben Island.

He is also respected for the way he preached reconciliation after the 1994 transition to multi-racial democracy following three centuries of white domination.

Well-wishers' messages, bouquets and stuffed animals have piled up outside Mandela's Johannesburg home and the wall of the hospital compound where he is being treated in the capital.

South Africans seemed resigned to the prospect of losing their hero, but expressed gratitude for what he had done.

"That great man who is in God's hands now fought so a black woman like me could move into this whites-only area in 1991," teacher Nthabi Chauke, 54, said outside the hospital. "Now I know what freedom feels like. I came here to say thank you."

Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one five-year term in office. Since then he has played little role in public life, dividing his time in retirement between his home in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Houghton and Qunu, the village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province where he was born.

Unilag Students Protest Sexual Harassment

UNILAG female students protest against randy male lecturers

There was pandemonium on Tuesday morning at the prestigious University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, Lagos following the protest of some Creative Arts students of the institution against sexual harassment and other allegations of misconduct by the university lecturers and other officials. DailyPost gathered from a reliable source that
the students in their hundreds stormed the Arts block with placards to register their
grievances and later moved their protest to the Social Science Department.

It was gathered that lecturers in the Department have made life miserable for female students by making sex one of the major criteria for passing their examination.

However, male students who obviously cannot offer sexual favours to their lecturers are made to part with exorbitant sums of money in place of sex.

Management of UNILAG is yet to respond to the allegations as at the time of filing this report.

Austrailia's First Female Prime Minister Resigns

As Kevin Rudd snatches back power...

Three years on, Kevin Rudd snatches back role as Australia's PM as Julia Gillard loses Labour party leadership ballot

In an extraordinary turnaround in political fortunes, Australia's former prime minister, Kevin Rudd, wrested the top job back today from Julia Gillard, who ousted him nearly three years ago to the day.

Mr Rudd, who was publicly tearful after being deposed in June 2010 and since then has plotted almost incessantly to regain office, was expected to be sworn in as prime minister tomorrow morning by the Australian Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, after  Ms Gillard, 51, formally resigned tonight.

In a piquant twist, Ms Bryce's son-in-law, Bill Shorten, played a pivotal role in the downfall of Australia's first female leader. An influential figure in Ms Gillard's Labor Party and prime mover in the 2010 coup, Mr Shorten publicly switched support to Mr Rudd 20 minutes before Labor politicians voted in a leadership ballot.

Once close colleagues, Mr Rudd and his former deputy had become sworn political foes. Although their enmity remained largely unspoken, Gillard loyalists had denounced him as "dysfunctional", "deeply flawed" and "a psychopath with a giant ego".

Such quotes have been seized on by the conservative Liberal Party, and are already being aired in  TV advertisements which are expected to be frequently replayed in the run-up to an election later this year.

Today's dramatic events lanced the boil which had been festering at the heart of Australian politics since Welsh-born Ms Gillard became prime minister. After the ballot, which Mr Rudd won by 57 votes to 51, an at times emotional Ms Gillard said she would retire from politics at the election.

It was poor polls which led to the 55-year-old Queenslander being knifed during his first term in office - an unprecedented event in Australia. And it was even poorer polls that led to a second sitting prime minister being dumped, amid predictions of the biggest landslide defeat for Labor for generations.

Mr Rudd - who may bring forward the election, set for 14 September - enjoyed widespread popularity after he was elected in 2007, ending 11 years of conservative rule. His ratings plummeted after he announced a new tax on wealthy mining companies, and abandoned an emissions trading scheme.

After he was unseated, the public took to him again, and polls have consistently shown that Labor would fare much better with him at the helm. However, it is doubtful whether he can actually win the election, rather than just saving seats. One commentator compared the leadership change to "putting a new collar on a three-legged dog".

No final decision on UK £3,000 bond for Nigerians, Indians and others

Did the United Kingdom think people in these countries would just allow this?

No final decision taken on visa bond: UK

The British government is planning to pilot a scheme from November in which tourists aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over 3,000 pounds for a six-month visit visa, which they will forfeit if they overstay in Britain.

The UK on Wednesday said no final decision has been taken on the new cash bond of Rs2.75 lakh for obtaining British visa, which they intend to run as a pilot scheme, a day after India voiced its strong protests over the proposed move.

Noting that UK wants the "brightest and the best" to help create the jobs and growth, Marcus Winsley, director of press and communications in the British High Commission in New Delhi, said, the government remains committed to tackling immigration abuse and was looking at a range of options.

"One of those options is a financial bond. The government intends to run a pilot scheme for such bonds, tightly targeted at a small number of visa applicants assessed to pose a high risk of overstaying.

"But no decisions have been taken on the detail of how such a pilot scheme would work in practice. Any such scheme will be designed in a way that does not cut across the UK's wish to be open for business, students and tourists," he said.

He also said, "senior UK and Indian officials are scheduled to meet in London in late-July for a comprehensive dialogue on visa related issues. Financial bonds are expected to be on the agenda."

According to a Sunday Times report earlier this week, the British government is planning to pilot a scheme from November targeted at visitors from at least six countries, including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Ghana.

Tourists aged 18 and over would be forced to hand over 3,000 pounds for a six-month visit visa, which they will forfeit if they overstay in Britain, according to the report.

Reiterating the promise made by British Prime Minister David Cameron during his last visit to India in February on relaxed visa regime, Winsley said, "The British Prime Minister's message is loud and clear. The UK wants the brightest and the best to help create the jobs and growth that will enable Britain to compete in the global race.

"So, for example, if you are an overseas businessperson seeking to invest and trade with world class businesses, one of the thousands of legitimate students keen to study at our first-class universities or a tourist visiting our world class attractions, be in no doubt: Britain is open for business."

Expressing serious concerns over the Britain's decision to run such a pilot scheme, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma had strongly raised the issue in his meetings in London with Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Oliver Letwin, Minister for Government policy in Cabinet office and Gregory Barker, Minister in charge for business engagement with India.

We need to change the way we think about changing the world?

No kidding

Hannatu Musawa still in love with Michael Jackson 4 years after death

Michael Jackson
Cover of Michael Jackson
She might deny it but read this and make-up your mind...

“DEAR MICHAEL,”
“HERE I AM” at the fourth anniversary of your death. It is hard to believe that June 25th will mark four years since you left us. Whenever I “REMEMBER THE TIME” I heard the “NEWSFLASH” on the “NITE-LINE” that your life was “ON THE LINE,” I prayed for your soul not to “FLY AWAY.” It was a “HEARTBREAKER” because by the “BREAK OF DAWN” when I learnt that you weren’t “GOING BACK TO INDIANA” but that you were no more with us “IN THE FLESH,” I felt as if I was “EATEN ALIVE.” I felt that “THERE MUST BE MORE TO LIFE THAN THIS” pain of losing you. Your death made me “SPEECHLESS” and made me “CRY;” I had to “STOP” and ask friends to “TELL ME I’M NOT DREAMING;” for Michael at the prime age of 50, you had “GONE TOO SOON.”

There just “AIN’T NO SUNSHINE” without you, there’s just no one else that could “BOOGIE ON DOWN” and gives us “BUTTERFLIES” the way you do. As sure as “ABC,” for any Tom, Dick, Harry, “BEN” or “JOHNNY RAVEN” who grew up anytime between 1970 and 2000, you were part of our “CHILDHOOD,” even if it was just for “ONE DAY IN YOUR LIFE.” Whether we liked you or not, whether we saw the man “BEHIND THE MASK,” in life as in death, you remain an object of fascination, you remain “INVINCIBLE” not only for the “SUPERFLY SISTER,” “CIRCUS GIRL,” “ROCKING ROBIN,” “TABLOID JUNKIE” or even the “STREET WALKER.” From your “HAPPY” contributions to the “HOT STREET” of entertainment, to your “UNCONVENTIONAL” private life, most of us have our memory of you made palpable every time one becomes a “DANCING MACHINE” to “GET ON THE FLOOR” to “JAM” to your music till the “BREAK OF DAWN.”

“WHATEVER HAPPENS,” the world of entertainment will never “COME TOGETHER” and “SHOO-BE-DOO-BE-DOO-DA-DAY” the way you made it. Never “AGAIN” will we have the kind of “SPEED DEMON” that could “BURN THE DISCO OUT” on the dance floor like you did; never again will there “BE A LION” of the ineradicable and “MORPHINE” talent that you were. They say some “PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND;” you certainly did Michael because yours was the “GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH.” When we hear your beat, we don’t need to ask “WHO IS IT?” When you sing, it’s as if “WE’VE GOT FOREVER.”

Your “HISTORY” began when your “MOTHER” gave birth to nine children in a family of talented and creative artists. From the very beginning there was “SOMETHING ABOUT YOU ‘BABY” Michael’ and your star shone brightly with “MONEY” and fame beckoning. You undoubtedly took all “THE LOVE YOU SAVE” because by the age of five, you were belting out a string of No. 1 hits and everybody was wanting to “ROCK WITH YOU.” As you “EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD” to stardom you proceeded to “ROCK MY WORLD.” Your voice was the “MORNING GLOW;” your lyrics made us believe in “A BRAND NEW DAY,” your “MELODIE” gave us “THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES” and your dance moves were just literally “OFF THE WALL.” You were phenomenal, electrifying and marvellous. The talent you exhibited was so epic that it was only “HUMAN NATURE” for you to be “COMFORTABLY NUMB” and unable to thrive as normal men do. Your controversies were a far “CRY” from the days when you were a “P.Y.T (PRETTY YOUNG THING),” who made millions “SHOUT,” “SCREAM” and jump “UP AGAIN” with joy. You gave us hits that could have easily been regarded as the ultimate “EARTH SONG.” “2 BAD” you lost your “PRIVACY” to “THE THIN ICE” of the media but your personal life also took a strange turn. Never mind the fact that you jilted “BILLIE JEAN,” your face and your lifestyle spelt “TROUBLE” and “THREATENED” your popularity. You appeared to be “STRANGER IN MOSCOW” than a conventional pop star when you travelled there to have a few face lifts.

At that point I didn’t “GET IT” Michael, I thought “WHATZUPWITU” man? I no longer knew if you were “BLACK OR WHITE” when you transformed yourself from big Mike to “LITTLE SUZIE”. You looked like you “WERE ALMOST THERE”, but not quite; because you resembled “SOMEONE IN THE DARK”; like “ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL” of weirdness. To honestly “SAY, SAY, SAY” that before your death you looked like a voodoo-death-god “WAITING FOR THE WORMS” on the “CAROUSEL” is implying the subtlest of innuendos to someone rather thick; somewhat like saying Charles Taylor fought his war like a “LIBERIAN GIRL.” Before your “FAREWELL, MY SUMMER LOVE,” you didn’t look like the man who urged us to “HEAL THE WORLD,” you looked gaunt and ashen, much like the “GHOSTS” in the thriller video. You looked like a man that was “SCARED OF THE MOON” or one who had been electrocuted by “2000 WATTS.” Your eccentric conduct made me confused; and yet despite this, my admiration for you was “UNBREAKABLE.”  Even now that you are gone, even now that “YOU ARE THERE” and not here, “I CAN’T HELP IT,” every time I hear you sing, you “TAKE ME BACK” to “THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL” when I first heard the Jackson 5 album.

No longer looking like a “MAN IN THE MIRROR,” you hoped to “KEEP THE FAITH” in your Never-land Ranch because it kept you in touch with the child within. After you said “SHE’S OUT OF MY LIFE” to your first wife Lisa Marie and said “THE GIRL IS MINE” to your nurse Debbie Rowe, you went on to say “BABY BE MINE” when you had three beautiful babies. If I thought that the saga in your life was “OUTSIDE THE WALL” of normality or that your problem was that you were still “IN THE CLOSET,” I hadn’t seen anything till the 2003 documentary that featured you as “THE WIZARD” who did “MONKEY BUSINESS” with young boys like they were your “GIRLFRIEND.” Like a perverted “SUNSET DRIVER” or your proverbial “DIRTY DIANA,” you saw nothing wrong with sleeping in the same bed with underage boys. Unfortunately for you, many thought this incongruity was “LOVE GONE BAD” for the poor “LOST CHILDREN.” You were prosecuted for preying on vulnerable young boys, “TOO YOUNG” for you to urge them to “GIVE INTO ME”. You demanded for your adversaries to tell you, “WHY YOU WANNA TRIP ON ME?” You asked all your fans; “WILL YOU BE THERE” for me?” I know that you wondered, “IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE;” please “DON’T LEAVE ME NOW,” “DON’T WALK AWAY” and abandon me”. However, just when I thought “YOU CAN’T WIN” Michael, at “THE TRIAL,” your exceptional defence team insisted that all the people that “WANNA BE STARTIN’ SOMETHING” by accusing you of being a “DANGEROUS,” child-raping “SMOOTH CRIMINAL” should “BEAT IT” and be ready to “RUN LIKE HELL.” After you saw the child molestation cases “FLY AWAY” when the judge ruled the boys were “JUST GOOD FRIENDS” to you, you pleaded with the public to “LEAVE ME ALONE” since your kindness was treated like “BLOOD ON THE DANCEFLOOR.” Was it scary then, “IS IT SCARY” now?

The one thing I knew about the people who wrongly accused you was that “THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US” fans the world over. They said you were a “CHEATER” and you were “BAD,” they wanted you to “FALL AGAIN” but in “OUR SMALL WAY” and “IN THE BACK” of our minds, we knew you struggled to make the world a better place by reaching one person at a time with your music. We knew you were kind, gracious, generous, compassionate and burdened. We knew you felt like you had “GOT TO BE THERE” for those who were downtrodden and “YOU WERE THERE” for them. You must have had “LONELY TEARDROPS” at their false accusations and lies before you said “GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.” But “HEY YOU;” don’t worry because “WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND.” There is a saying that “EVERYBODY’S SOMEBODY’S FOOL;” you certainly were nobody’s fool Michael.

“THIS TIME AROUND” everyone will agree that despite your battered reputation, amidst all the things you were and “ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE,” your gift was unparalleled. “THE FEELING THAT WE HAVE” when we hear you sing is rich enough to “TOUCH THE ONE YOU LOVE,” which was almost everyone. Your “MIND IS THE MAGIC,” you were a genius; “THE MAN” with the Midas touch. No scandal can torpedo your legacy now; “THE SHOW MUST GO ON” for the King of Pop. The “THRILLER” may be gone, but the thrill will always remain…“CAN YOU FEEL IT?”

Michael you make me “SMILE” when I see your videos, when I hear your voice, your lyrics make me see “ANOTHER PART OF ME” and you make me believe that, as people, “WE ARE THE WORLD” and that “WE ARE HERE TO CHANGE THE WORLD.” You said that “PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD GO ROUND” if only they could “COME TOGETHER.” You were “WORKING DAY AND NIGHT” to represent all this and I believe “THAT’S WHAT LOVE IS MADE OF.” I sing your songs to tell my “BEAUTIFUL  GIRL,” my daughter, “YOU ARE MY LIFE”, I mimic your words “TO MAKE MY FATHER PROUD,” I belt out your melody to let my mother know that “YOU’RE MY BEST FRIEND, MY LOVE,” I repeat your songs to tell my friends that “YOU CAN CRY ON MY SHOULDER”, I chant your lyrics so my sisters can know that “YOU ARE NOT ALONE” and they can “CALL ON ME” whenever and I use your vision to write to my fellow countrymen weekly that “WE’VE GOT A GOOD THING GOING” if we “DON’T WALK AWAY” from Nigeria.

“I CAN’T HELP IT” Michael but your “MUSIC AND ME” are a match made in heaven. Through your music your “LOVE IS HERE AND YOU ARE GONE.” Whenever I hear your songs “I HEAR A SYMPHONY,” then “IT’S THE FALLING IN LOVE” and ‘whoosh,’ “I’M IN LOVE AGAIN.” “I JUST CAN’T STOP LOVING YOU” on my CD player. Your songs “ROCK MY WORLD,” have a “SERIOUS EFFECT” on me, “GIVE ME HALF A CHANCE” to “XSCAPE” and “SAVE ME” from boredom especially when there’s “NOBODY HOME.” “I WANT YOU BACK” for “ONE MORE CHANCE” to sing again and despite your troubled life, “I LIKE THE WAY YOU ARE” and “I’LL BE THERE” to listen to your music for as long as I live…I only wish “HEAVEN CAN WAIT!”

“THIS IS IT,” I loved your music Michael, I remain your number one fan and I still believe in your ability to bring together people, cultures and kinds through it. I could walk more than “25 MILES” to celebrate your life and all your accomplishments and I know “I’LL COME HOME TO YOU” on my record player. You brought joy and entertainment to my life. Although I don’t “WANNA BE WHERE YOU ARE,” I still miss you. “MAYBE TOMORROW” or as “SOON AS I GET HOME,” I’ll put on your music and dance and when I “DON’T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH,” I won’t blame it on you Michael; I’ll “BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE.” …And “THE BEAT GOES ON;” Thank you. Peace to you brother…“FOR ALL TIME!”

From your number one fan, Hanney

WORDS OF A SON FOR HIS MOTHER (Tribute for the Matriarch) By Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

It is no longer news that the Iyaloja General of Nigeria and mother to former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji passed on over a week ago. Here is a tribute from her son, Asiwaju, Bola Ahmed Tinubu...

WORDS OF A SON FOR HIS MOTHER (Tribute for the Matriarch) By Bola Ahmed Tinubu

My mother, (Maa’mi) Hajia Abibatu Mogaji, has passed. But it is so obvious from the outpouring of emotions across Nigeria and beyond that Mama lives. God blessed her with 96 plus years on earth. But she was not great because of her longevity. For, it is not how long one lives but how well. But Mama used every minute of her sojourn on earth wisely and well. My mother lived a long, fruitful life that benefited all who were fortunate enough to come into contact with her. Everywhere she went and everything she touched, she left better than she found them. She added and never subtracted. She made and never destroyed. Her light consistently shone and the darkness could never comprehend nor extinguish it. God gave women a tremendous creative force and that force lived in my mother until her last day.
But she is not only my mother. She is my Hero. To Africa, she is Mama Africa. Nigeria shared her with the world. I recall in 1988 when we had a delegation for the “Free Mandela” campaign in South Africa. She was there front and centre with Sam Nujoma, the first President of Namibia.
Most of you know her as the Iyaloja of Lagos or the President General of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men. She is more. She was Iya-Gbo-Gbo (Mother of All), Iya Oba of Lagos, Iya Oba of Ikirun and Iya Oba of many other towns too numerous to list. She received numerous citations, awards and recognition from mosques and churches across the land. As a validation of her depth of knowledge and stewardship, the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria awarded her Honorary Doctorate Degree, (Honoris Causa).
She was a powerful, progressive public figure in her own right. When it was fashionable and accepted to ridicule and look down on market women and men, she was their staunch and proud advocate for they were and are an important part of our society, culture and economy. She stood by them as they stood by her. She was instrumental in shaping policies and practices to assure more Nigerians benefited from commerce and trade which in the former days were dominated by foreign hands. She helped mould and organized the people of the markets into a potent force for justice and social progress, not just for their own interests but for the good of the weak, poor and downcast.
She did not matriculate in the halls of some renowned university. She never had to. A student of the wisdom of our great traditional culture, she inherently knew things the universities taught. She also knew many important things such institutions can never teach. She was a philosopher, pragmatist and a captain who knew how to navigate our complex system but she did so not for selfish reasons or private gain. She did so for a higher purpose: To lead her constituency to a better place. My mother’s life demonstrated that character, integrity, loyalty, commitment and fidelity to lofty principles are the loftiest values in life. You always knew at every point in time what Mama stood for.
Some may say she was popular and respected because she was President General of Market Women’s Association. I say she was President General because she was popular, honest and respected. She never demanded or craved respect and honour. She earned it.
From the depth of my heart, I thank the teeming market men and women who closed the markets as an act intended to honour my mother on her passing. I am the only son who can apologize to the committed market men and women and those members of the public inconvenienced by the market closings. Their act of love and solidarity during this time of remembrance for my mother will not go unrewarded. That is the tradition for them to honour their hero.
For all the good she did as a public figure, what you witnessed was but a fraction of this remarkable woman. You see, I had the unique privilege and honour to be her son. As a mother is where she truly shined.
She did not just provide food, she nourished us. She did not just manage the house and help give us a roof over our heads, she gave us a loving home. She did not just instruct us in what to do, she took the time to teach and sculpt us and to let us drink from her deep reservoir of wisdom and experience. She set me on my path. Whenever times got tough, she held up a lantern that I may see my way forward and she encouraged me as only a loving mother can do for a son.
Without her guidance and tutelage, I could not have done what I have been able to accomplish.
Yes, my mother is gone for her soul has been taken to a better place. However, the spirit by which she lived and instructed others continues to live in the hearts of the people she touched. In her honour, I ask that we redouble our efforts to continue to improve Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Edo, Ondo and Nigeria so that they become what she dreamed they would be.
I shall miss you, Mother. I may not have always been the best and perfect son but you were always the best and perfect mother. God could certainly not have given me a better gift than such a wonderful soul as my mother. I only wish other people could know the special joy I felt in having a mother as special as you. In this tough world, the word “love” is not used enough. I am proud and honoured to say that you raised me with love and that I love you, Maa’mi. You are the best.

4 Prisoners on Death Row Executed in Nigeria

This must have been kept secret for it to be just breaking...

Traumatised inmates heard screams and thuds from the gallows as Nigerian authorities hanged four convicted criminals on Monday in the West African nation's first known executions since 2006, said a human rights lawyer on Tuesday.

A fifth man is yet to be hanged at Benin City Prison after the executioner had technical problems with the gallows, Chino Obiagwu of the national lawyers' rights group Lepad told Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Amnesty International said the man, identified as Thankgod Ebhos by Obiagwu, was at "imminent risk of execution".

The London-based organisation's deputy Africa director, Lucy Freeman, said the hangings would mark a "truly dark day for human rights" in the nation.

Attorney general Henry Idahagbon of southern Edo state confirmed the four executions, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported.

Obiagwu said the men were hanged despite pending suits at the appeal court and had been on death row for 16 years. He said two were his clients, convicted of murder, but he did not know the crimes of the other sentenced men.

"Under Nigerian laws, an appeal and application for stay of execution should restrain further action. By executing the prisoners, Nigeria's government has demonstrated a gross disregard to the rule of law and respect for the judicial process," he said.

Highlights of Spain 3-0 Nigeria

Bad result for Nigeria.

Super Eagles Get $1.7 Million Despite Confederations Cup Exit

Now, that is what I call cool money...

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Earn $1.7m Despite Confed Cup Exit

Africa’s representatives at the Confederations Cup, Nigeria has exited the competition, earning $1.7 million in prize money.

The team only managed to place third in Group B, which also had World champions Spain, Copa America champions Uruguay and Oceania champions Tahiti.

As Spain, Brazil, Italy and Uruguay progress to the semi-finals, all other sides – Nigeria inclusive – earned a total of $1.7 million each.

A jackpot of $20 million will be split amongst teams that progressed to the semi-finals based on their final positions in the competition. Spain, Brazil, Italy and Uruguay are all in the running to win the $4.1 million attached to winning the Confederations Cup.

My fellow Nigerians; football is about winning games

Football, the game we love so much is about scoring goals and winning matches. It is not about passing the ball, ball possession, creating chances and not converting them, not being disgraced or ‘doing well’ without achieving positive results.

If you agree with me that football is about scoring goals and winning games, you will agree with me that the Super Eagles have not performed well at the Confederations Cup currently holding in Brazil. The eagles were eliminated last night after a 0-3 loss to Spain.

The popular opinion amongst Nigerian football fans and some analysts is that the team “did well” but did not have quality strikers to convert chances created.

In my opinion, the poor finishing of the Super Eagles is an indication of poor performance and failure. The team’s coach, Stephen Keshi had enough time to scout for competent strikers that could have been added before the Confederations Cup.

It is unacceptable to suggest that in a country of over 160 million people, three prolific strikers cannot be found for the national team. Hence, I urge my fellow Nigerians to stop embracing mediocrity and call a spade, a spade- the Super Eagles performed poorly with Mikel Obi being the only stand-out player at the Confederations Cup.

I have not written this blog post to run the Super Eagles down but it is important to recognise failure when it occurs so as to make the necessary changes to achieve the desired success.

I hope the technical crew of the Super Eagles will do what it takes to ensure that Nigeria qualifies for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and perform on that big stage.  Nigerians deserve nothing less.
