JARUSHUB LAUNCHES CAREER ACADEMY

Enrollees at one of JARUSHUB training sessions

Unemployment is a such a huge problem in Nigeria that a large proportion of people who claim to be 'employed' cannot be said to be gainfully employed.

One Nigerian startup that has been doing a lot to stem the tide of this negative trend in recent times is JARUSHUB . The outfit has Suraj Oyewale popularly known as 'Jarus' in social media circles as head coach. He brings-in his brilliant insights of Corporate Nigeria into coaching fresh graduates and young professionals on how to get high paying and attractive jobs in Oil and Gas, Consulting, Banking and other sectors of Nigeria's economy.

Taking this further, JARUSHUB has launched a career academy where graduates and professionals looking for career advancement will be put through what is described as a "5-week course where employability and career improvement lessons are taught. "

The course has 2 variants:

1. JCA GRADUATE CLASS (JCA GC): This is for students, corps members and fresh graduates who are still unemployed or underemployed. This class is essentially focusing on EMPLOYABILITY.

2. JCA PROFESSIONAL CLASS (JCA PC): This is for people that are already working but wish to improve their careers. Essentially, the goal here is CAREER ADVANCEMENT.

Knowing Jarus and his track record of providing great value at his coaching sessions some of which I have attended, the JCA is definitely a course I recommend to graduates and professionals that want to take huge leaps forward in securing great jobs and enjoying career advancement.

Maramoja Adds Okadas to its Taxi Hailing Service in Kenya

You might know Uber, the app that allows you hail a cab at a low price. Maramoja is one of its rivals in Kenya and has added Okadas to its service offerings which makes sense with Nairobi's notorious traffic.

In Kenya, Okadas are known as 'Boda Bodas'. I wonder why they don't just make it 'Boda', it would save them and  me a lot of time because I had to type it twice!

Read more about the service by visiting the company's website here.

Anyway, I am thinking if Nairobi can do it, its bigger brother, Lagos can take it to the next level in terms of deploymnt and acceptance.

What do you think?

BlackBerry Wants to Make Bacteria Free Phones

This is a welcome idea that is good for the struggling smartphone maker...

BlackBerry considers bacteria-free phone

BlackBerry may design a bacteria-free smartphone as it bids to become the secure mobile choice for the health-care industry, chief executive John Chen said.

The Canadian mobile manufacturer is partnering with ThoughtWire and Cisco Systems to provide nurses and doctors in a Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital unit with a portable messaging and alert system. BlackBerry declined to disclose how much it is spending on the project.

Medical equipment in patient rooms, including mobile phones, can carry bacteria through the hospital, said Aviv Gladman, chief medical information officer for Mackenzie Health.

Gladman said that medical professionals are supposed to wipe their phone with alcohol before entering and exiting a patient’s room. A study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology found that about 20 to 30 percent of germs transfer between a phone and a fingertip.

My Message to those Upset About Saraki and Dogara

I have often opined that many Nigerians are politically naive. This position seems justified with the reactions of many people to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as the Slllpeaker of the House of Representatives.

What are the important issues here? The first thing is to consider is: what are the requirements for election into these 2 offices? The requirement is simply that senators-elect vote for their leaders, members-elect of the House of Representatives vote their leaders into office. Party and regional considerations are only extraneous variables that the process does not depend on.

Were last week's events at the National Assembly bad for the APC? Yes. Was it bad for Nigeria? No. I hold this position because we now know that the National Assembly is an independent body that can take its own decisions without direction from a particular group or groups.

In strengthening our institutions, we must allow them evolve within the constitutional framework and not prevent them from charting their course as long it is within the confines of our law.

Why You Should Travel Now!

If you have been putting off travelling for a while now, it is time to get packing and travel. Let us face it, there will always be an excuse to give but here are the reasons you should travel now.

The ease

It is much easier now than before. There is access to a lot of resources and you can easily plan your travel from anywhere. Just as soon as the idea of the place to visit hits you maybe in the bath, with your smartphone you can find out as much as possible about the place, how much transport and accommodation will cost. With a service like Jovago.com, you can secure your accommodation ahead and pay when you there. From booking flight to getting taxi down to your destination, there are numerous online services you can use to get the best deals. You can get it all fixed within 20 minutes on the phone while you are lounging in your room, enjoying your favourite TV Show.

Finding self and learning about others

Travel is pleasurable and at the same time helps you connect with others. Being in a new environment can be challenging. Despite the challenges, most people end up thoroughly enjoying the experience. When trying to find self, travelling is usually advised. You have enough time to actually be alone, listen and consciously make a plan. There is a lot you can learn about yourself from how you adapt to the new environment. It is also an avenue to learn how to relate with others and peculiarities in different societies.

Education

This is one of the most important reasons to pack up and travel now. You are most likely so used to your environment or world that you have become so comfortable. One way to challenge yourself and expand your horizon is by travelling. Getting soaked in a tropical rain forest town like Ondo or making your way through the teeming crowd in Kano market on a sunny day doesn’t just present an adventurous tale but helps you gain first-hand experience of life in these parts. With travelling, you can pick up new languages, cultures and a wider knowledge of the world around you. Imagine the feeling you get from visiting Badagry, a historic slave trade route.

Adventure and the tales

You can always travel in your head or by merely looking at pictures online but nothing beats experiencing physically. You want to be there and take pictures. Gather memories that will last forever and probably be passed on to your grandchildren. From the Argungu Fishing Festival to hiking at Obudu Mountain Resort, there are a lot of adventurous events and places to visit in Nigeria. Travel gives you fulfilling, lasting experiences that you can always relive even by sharing the tales with others. If not for anything you should do it for the Vine, Instagram, Facebook and tweets.

Right now is the best time

Finally you should travel now because right now is the best time you have. Time blows pass really quick and unnoticed. I will do it next month, then the next. Before you know it, two years, four years, you have still not ventured to see the destinations. It is important to travel now because you actually only have now. Something else is likely to come up if you don’t make the decision to do it right away. It is better to travel to those places on your bucket list now and do something else later.

Most Popular Bus Stops n Lagos: Mushin

Mushin Bus Stop

What can I say about Mushin Olosha?  It's difficult to say whether Mushin is popular or notorious but either way, it is a major part of Lagos.

I cannot say exactly how or why Mushin became popular but it is a major bus stop on Agege Motor Road,  close to Oshodi,  shares boundaries with Surulere and Yaba and is a popular market with different smaller markets,  like Ojuwoye and Amun.

Mushin is also a gateway to the heavily populated Alimosho area of Lagos via Isolo into Iyana Ejigbo and Ikotun. Therefore, it is a hub for many people from these locations moving towards the Island. There are also buses that will link you to places like CMS, Eko-Idumota, Yaba,  Ojuelegba,  Oshodi and many other important parts of Lagos.

Mushin suffers from dilapidated infrastructure,  overpopulation and poor hygiene. There's also a high level of criminality particularly in the form of thuggery which is difficult to curb because of the poverty of many of its residents.

Mushin is not all bad as you can buy lots of foodstuff there with entire streets dedicated to particular types of food. For example,  the Elelubo market which is more or less the capital of yam flour (Elubo) processing in Lagos. There's also the kulikuli (groundnut cookies) market a lot of pharmacies dispensing drugs because of its proximity to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Mushin is always vibrant even through the night but only the brave would be around there beyond 11 pm unless of course you live there.

A first time visitor might be intimidated by the rowdy nature of Mushin which is not helped by the crumbling infrastructure. Therefore if you want to visit, you might need an experienced person to guide you through the area.

Mushin bus stop is not to be confused with the entire Mushin Local Government which has many relatively safe locations like Ilupeju, Palm Avenue into some parts of Ilasa.

For the bold who want to experience the rugged nature of Lagos, Mushin bus stop is somewhere to visit to feel the pulse of the city and get your adrenaline pumping.
