Top 10 Most Popular Jobs in the United States in 2015

Jobs are essentially, for most people, it is either you have one or looking for one. Have you ever wondered what the top jobs are in terms of popularity? No need to wonder anymore as alec.co.uk has done the research and these are the top 10 jobs in the United States in 2015:

  • Network Systems Analysts: The development of IT has led to an increase in organisations seeking installation and maintenance of networked communications. Systems analysts solve problems related to networked computer technology.
  • Physician's Assistant: Physician assistants are trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative healthcare services, as overseen by a physician. Primary healthcare settings include family medicine and pediatrics.
  • Medical Assistants: The growing healthcare sector means more administrative and clinical tasks need to be performed. Other medical assistants can help with clinical tasks. Typically, work takes place in the offices of physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists, ophthalmologists and other health practitioners.
  • Medical Records and Health Information Technicians: Case and healthcare records are increasingly used for organisational management and ongoing evaluation of healthcare progress. Records might include patient medical history, symptoms, treatments, tests, outcomes, etc. Medical tests and information management are major growth areas.
  • Software Engineers: As IT continues to evolve, so does the work of computer software engineers, who design and develop new computer software systems. The engineer analyses users' needs and designs software or programs to meet these needs.
  • Physical Therapist Aides: The number of individuals with disabilities or limited physical function is growing, so the number of assistants who provide services to alleviate the difficulties is set to increase.
  • Fitness Trainers: Aerobics instructors and fitness trainers lead groups and individuals in a range of exercise activities. More people are spending time and money on their leisure activities, meaning employment opportunities for fitness instructors will grow.
  • Database Administrators: Many organisations now depend on the instant availability of data. Database administrators work with the relevant software to retrieve and present data. They need to understand every aspect of an organisation's database system, from its performance to security and the platform it runs on.
  • Veterinary Technicians: Expectations for leading edge veterinary care are rising as healthcare in general progresses. Veterinary technicians perform tests, and treat and diagnose medical conditions in animals. Work can take place in domestic pet surgeries, livestock management, wildlife medicine, or pharmaceutical sales or biomedical research.
  • Dental Hygienists: As our healthcare involves an increasing emphasis on oral health and retention of natural teeth, work opportunities for dental hygienists are set to grow. Hygienists examine patients' gums and teeth, remove deposits, administer x-rays, and more.

Top 10 Bus Stops in Lagos

Lagos is Africa's largest mega city and has seemingly limitless energy with a vibe and jive that is unique.  One of the reasons for this are its bus stops, each adding its unique flavour to the fine blend of the good, the bad, the most beautiful and the ugly that the city is.  Next is my list of the Top 10 Bus Stops in Lagos starting from No. 10, I am sure Jay Jay Okocha would like that:

10. Ikorodu

It is wrong to call Ikorodu a town these days with its population which keeps growing at an incredible rate and its rapid development. It is not an overstatement that at least 2 million people live in Ikorodu and its outskirts.

Sabo is the largest bus stop in Ikorodu and by extension, it is one of the most important bus stops in Lagos.

Read more here.

9.  Mushin

What can I say about Mushin Olosha?  It's difficult to say whether Mushin is popular or notorious but either way, it is a major part of Lagos.
I cannot say exactly how or why Mushin became popular but it is a major bus stop on Agege Motor Road,  close to Oshodi,  shares boundaries with Surulere and Yaba and is a popular market with different smaller markets,  like Ojuwoye and Amun.

Ojota is the touching ground for many first-time visitors to Lagos. The overwhelming majority of interstate buses pass through it with many having it as their final bus stop.

It is also a major park for buses heading out of Lagos. Hence, do not be surprised if motor park touts lift you and your belongings towards a bus of unknown destination if you drop at Ojota with what even remotely looks like a traveling bag especially if you are a lady! They can be that aggressive as they assume everybody stopping at Ojota with a bag is heading outside Lagos, it doesn't matter to them that you might be heading to the West while the bus they are loading is heading to the East. It is up to you to defend yourself- surprised? Don't be, welcome to Lagos!

Lagos is a heavily-populated city and fewer parts of it are more populous than the areas that Mile 2 serves as a major terminus. From Mile 2 Estate, Festac Town,, Satellite Town, Trade Fair Complex, Ojo Town and Barracks, Lagos State University, Alaba International market, Okokomaiko, Ajangbadi, Ijanikin, Agbara all the way to Badagry and Seme border into Benin Republic. I have not yet mentioned Apapa with its port and Tin Can Island.

Mile 2 serves as the intersection of Lagos-Badagry and Apapa Oshodi Express way which are 2 major roads in Lagos.

Like Oshodi, it has Mile 2 Oke (Upper Mile 2) and Mile 2 Isale (Lower Mile 2). Mile 2 is essentially the bridge that vehicles coming from or heading to Apapa take to by-pass Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

There are 3 bridges linking the Island to the Mainland in Lagos: Eko bridge, 3rd Mainland bridge and Carter bridge.

Of the three, Carter bridge is the oldest and at a point was the only bridge linking the Island to the Mainland. At the Lagos Island end of Carter bridge is Idumota bus stop. It extends, right from the bridge all along Nnamdi Azikwe into the old bus terminus just before the iconic Lagos Central Mosque.

Idumota is as popular as a market as it is as a bus stop. Clothes, electronics, latest Nollywood movies, consumables, car spare parts and accessories. Practically any consumer goods you can think-of can be found there.

I am tempted to start with the lyrics to Wizkid's song 'Ojuelegba' about this very popular bus stop but that might not be fair to one of the most iconic locations in Lagos.
Ojuelegba is in the middle of the old Lagos Mainland Local Government.  On one side of it is Surulere on the other is Yaba, the 2 major districts that make Lagos Mainland with close proximity to Western Avenue (now Funsho Williams Avenue) and Eko bridge., Ojuelegba is ever-bubbling and busy.

Iyana Ipaja is the biggest bus stop along the Alimosho axis of Lagos. Strategically located on the Lagos-Abeokuta Express Way, it serves as a hub for commuters getting out of places like Abeokuta, Ifo, Sango-Ota in Ogun state Alagbado, Alakuko, Abule Egba and many more heading towards Ikeja, Lagos Island and beyond.

Perhaps the secret of Iyana Ipaja's popularity is the fact that it has proximity to several heavily populated areas within Alimosho Local Government Area, like Igando, Ikotun, Egbeda, Idimu and others extending to Ogun state.

This means it is ever-busy with road-side sellers, street traders, buses and private cars all seeking to sell or make their towards their different destinations.

Ikeja is the political capital of Lagos which in turn is the commercial nerve centre of not only Nigeria but the whole of West Africa.

This fact by itself is not the major reason Ikeja is a major bus stop in Lagos.

Ikeja bus stop is quite big because it extends from Old Ikeja terminus to Underbridge, Ikeja-Along to Ikeja-Inside. You could argue that these are different bus stops but as is the case with Oshodi, Mushin, Obalende and other major bus terminuses in Lagos, they are a combination of smaller bus stops under one umbrella.
Strategically placed between Lagos Island and Ikoyi is one of the most popular bus stops in Lagos- Obalende. The name Obalende when literally translated to English from Yoruba means 'The king chased me to this point '. Who the king and the person being chased were is not the subject of this post.

I will be looking at Obalende as a major transportation hub in Lagos. It is one of the major gateways into what is now referred to as 'The Island ', a term used to describe the the most important and influential districts in Lagos outside of its capital on the mainland, Ikeja. These are Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island and Lekki. It is a major terminus for buses coming from the mainland to the Island via the 3rd Mainland Bridge which is Africa's longest bridge, 11.8km long.

This strategic location makes Obalende one of the most important transportation hubs in Lagos where you can find buses to practically every location in the city. Many people from outside Lagos coming to trade enter the Island via Obalende. Hence, there are many interstate buses especially to other cities in Southern Nigeria. It has a sprawling underbridge bus park which also serves as a market.

And it's time for No.1! You can tell, I am excited... which bus stop do you think it is? Let's find out!
Does this picture give you a clue?
You should know by now if you ever lived in Lagos that my No.1 is:

Lagos, the Centre of Excellence and undisputed commercial hub of West Africa is always alive with the hustle and bustle of its people as well as visitors. However, amongst the popular locations within the city,  there is an elite division of must know and see places particularly bus stops.

Having been born and lived in Lagos virtually all my life except for the enforced absence for a year during national youth service, I feel qualified to do a review of the most popular bus stops in the city starting with Oshodi.

Oshodi is perhaps the most popular bus stop in Nigeria,  it seems to enjoy its popularity because of its relative centrality to most parts of Lagos like the Island,  other parts of the Mainland and heavily populated areas like Alimosho and Ikorodu. It is also an intersection between the busy Apapa-Oshodi Express Way, Gbagada Express Way and Agege Motor Road.

It is divided loosely into: Oshodi Oke (Upper Oshodi) and Oshodi Isale (Lower Oshodi).

You can get a bus to almost every part of Lagos at Oshodi and there are also many Interstate buses heading to the Southwest,  North and Southeast. Truth be told though other bus stops like Ojota and Jibowu in Yaba beat Oshodi as a terminus for Interstate buses. However, Oshodi is also a major train station and it used to have its notorious "Oju-Irin" market in the past where the railway was transformed into a marketplace that disappeared when a train was approaching to reemerge after it had left the station.

Read more here.

There you have it folks! What do you think of this list, do let me know by dropping a comment and let's discuss.

Learn What's New in Office 2016

Most Popular Bus Stops in Lagos: Iyana Ipaja

You can get buses to most parts of Lagos and Ogun state at Iyana Ipaja. There are also many interstate transport companies with parks there.

A lot of people working in Ikeja stay in Alimosho and a lot of them pass through Iyana-Ipaja to and from work. At the end of the Lagos boundary into Ogun state is Sango which is another major bus stop which is actually in Ogun state but feels more like Lagos. Many development experts regard such boundary areas as Sango as part of Lagos Metropolis which has extended beyond Lagos State.

Being a central location to such major bus stops and heavily populated areas means Iyana Ipaja continues to expand and requires better infrastructure to service it. It is already a major hub for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service but the roads around the area need rehabilitation and expansion.

It is definitely a part of Lagos that serves as an artery for millions of people in Lagos to commute to and from work and like every major bus stop in Lagos, it is a market with clothing items, food stuff and other consumables for sale.

If you have to visit Abeokuta or parts of Alimosho while in Lagos, catch the sights and sounds of Iyana Ipaja, it could get your Adrenaline pumping because it has the hustle and bustle Lagos is renowned for not to mention the traffic jam.

BlackBerry Announces Its First Android Smartphone Called Priv

The Priv will be the first Android BlackBerry Smartphone

BlackBerry seems to have finally accepted defeat in the smartphone OS battle as it has finally confirmed that it is making an Android-powered flagship. The announcement was made in its Q2 Fiscal 2016 results.

John Chen, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO said:

"Today, I am confirming our plans to launch Priv, an Android device named after BlackBerry's heritage and core mission of protecting our customers' privacy. Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform."

This means that BlackBerry is trying to take advantage of the security it offers on its devices and the popularity of the Android OS. I believe this combination is likely to help the company rebound. It will be interesting to see how networks and customers react to the arrival of this Android BlackBerry device particular in terms of Internet and data services.

Time will tell.

Amazing Images from Arafah

Pilgrims helping themselves up at Arafah

Today is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic Calendar and it is the day of Arafah  It is the day when Muslim pilgrims assemble on the plain of ‘Arafah to complete one of the essential rites of the Hajj (Pilgrimage) which is the 5th pillar of Islam.

Over 2 milllion pilgrims gathered there today and you can see some of the images from there today that I got from Twitter below:

The day after Arafah which is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah is Eid ul Adha also known as Eid ul Kabir where we Muslims slaughter rams, goats, cattle and camels and distribute among family, friends and the needy in commemoration of the the faithfulness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) also known as Abraham in his willingness to sacrifice Ismail (AS) who was his only son at the time in fulfillment of his vow to do so if God gave him a son.

Most Popular Bus Stops in Lagos: Mile 2

You can get buses going to most parts of Lagos from Mile 2 and there are many interstate buses heading to different parts of Lagos too. The interstate transport operators also have Masa-Masa which is the next bus stop after Mile 2 heading towards Festac as an hub. There are many bus services to other West African countries at Masa-Masa with a few at Mile 2 itself. So, if you want to travel to Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana and beyond by road, you probably have to pass through Mile 2.

Work is presently going on the Lagos light rail project linking Lagos Island to Okokomaiko in its first phase and ultimately heading for Badagry on completion with Mile 2 as a major train station.

Mile 2 also serves as a jetty for ferry services easily linking Apapa and Lagos Island. This means of transport is not yet used to its full potential in Mile 2 and other parts of Lagos.

Like with other major bus stops in Lagos, Mile 2 is also a market where different things are sold, foodstuff, clothes, books and others. Not too far away from Mile 2 is the Berger car market, the largest 'Tokunbo' (imported used car) market in Nigeria. Most cars in Lagos are bought at this matket which is amazing when you think of it.

Mile 2 is an important bus stop in Lagos and as the Badagry axis of Lagos continues to develop, it can only get more important in the future.

A Luggage Guide for Flying Travelers

It can be quite confusing especially if it’s your first time traveling by air. You are not sure what exactly to pack and it can be a little embarrassing and annoying when you discover you can’t fly with half of what you have packed because they are prohibited.

Not to worry Jovago.com Nigeria, Africa’s largest online hotel booking portal has put together some guidelines for you so you do not have to part with any of your items at the airport. Though there a few variations depending on the airline you will be flying with, here are some common things you won’t be allowed to fly with.

Quickly before proceeding, here are some terminologies you may come across in the cause of the article: checked baggage – luggage that is not accessible to you throughout the time of your flight and carry-on bag – this is also called hand luggage, a small bag you are permitted to carry into the passenger cabin.

1)      Ammunitions and Explosives
All firearms and ammunition are prohibited in carry-on and checked baggage, either are explosives. If you are carrying a gun, you should declare at the point of entry and you must have a license for it.

2)      Pharmaceutical Products
Traveling with a high quantity of any type pharmaceutical products is not also allowed. Medications are however allowed with no disturbance.

3)      Luxury Jewelries or Precious stones
It is always best to declare upon arrival the carriage of luxury jewelries or precious stones. Also note that if this is in unreasonably excess amount, it may draw certain questions at the checkpoint.

4)      Excessive Money or Souvenirs
For certain countries like USA, you must declare your money to customs if it exceeds $10,000 or its equivalent in any foreign currency. In Nigeria, gifts and souvenirs exceeding a value of N50, 000 are likely to be banned by customs; excluding items like camera, smartphones and other luxury goods.

5)      Sharp Objects
Sharp objects, which are capable of causing injury, are things customs must not find in your baggage. Things like knives, hatchets, arrows, darts etc. are not allowed.

6)      Hard Drugs
No need to dwell much on this, it is what many know already, cocaine, marijuana and any other sort of hard drugs is highly prohibited. If caught, there is a heavy penalty for this including serving jail term.

7)      Fresh Food
Any sort of fresh food is not allowed. Though I doubt anyone would want to carry fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs or any sort of persevered foods all the way from one country to another. However, such items are prohibited.

8)      Water & Oil
Some airlines do not allow water or oil on board. If you are still in doubt of what items you should carry, it is always best to check with your airline to know what is allowed or not.

Todorov and Sanchez: 2 Men that Defeated Floyd Mayweather in the Boxing Ring

Mayweather vs. Todorov

Floyd Mayweather just retired with a perfect 49-0 record after defeating Andre Berto. This feat equals Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record in professional boxing. However, what many people do not know is that Marciano lost 4 fights as an amateur. Similarly, Floyd Mayweather did lose 2 fights as an amateur, the last to Bulgarian,  Serafim Todorov in the semifinal of the boxing event of the Atlanta 96 Olympic games.

Serafim Todorov defeated Mayweather at Atlanta 96

Mayweather went on to become boxing biggest star while Todorov lost his way having never turned pro and ending-up in relative obscurity.

Augie Sanchez is the first man to defeat Mayweather as an Amateur

Incidentally,  Augie Sanchez is another man to have defeated Mayweather as an amateur during the qualifiers for the Atlanta 96 Olympic games.

This goes to show that Mayweather knew what he as saying when he said "I am not perfect ... we learn everyday".

Mayweather: I am the man

Great champion he is but a man who never tasted defeat in the boxing ring he definitely isn't. While his professional perfect record stands, Augie Sanchez and Serafin Todorov are 2 men that know what it is like to walk out of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather as victors and that is something special.

Most Popular Bus Stops in Lagos: CMS

There are 3 Major bus stops on the Island: Obalende, Idumota and CMS. CMS is an acronym that means Christian Missionary Society (CMS) which was very active during Nigeria's colonial period and has a tall building on the Marina where the bus stop is located.

CMS is a convenient bus stop for many people commuting to Broad Street which is perhaps the most important street in Nigeria in terms of economic power with many banks having their corporate headquarters there with First Bank and United Bank for Africa being prime examples. It also very close to Victoria Island and by extension Ikoyi. People commuting to Lekki and Ajah which have become important urban centres in the last 20 years pass through CMS as well.

There are a lot sea-worthy and abandoned vessels along the Marina and you can see them around CMS which also serves as a jetty for ferries which transport commuters to and from places like Ikorodu, Oworonsoki and Badagry. Sea travel is still in its infancy in Nigeria because of poor funding and safety issues. However, there are still thousands of people that access the Island by ferries that berth at CMS every week.

CMS is also a major hub for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in Lagos and it extends to Victoria Island from there.

There's usually heavy traffic at CMS in the morning because of the indiscriminate parking of Lagos yellow buses known as 'Danfos' and the rush of many workers to get to work on time.

There are many formal and informal commercial enterprises as well as traders located at CMS like the popular CMS bookshop which stocks Christian and secular books. However, it is not as big a market as Idumota or Obalende are.

Almost every part of Lagos can be accessed by bus from CMS but you might have to ask where to board the bus heading to your destination because of the different parks they operate from.

CMS and the Marina axis is well-lit at night and has some level of activity at every hour; day or night. However, hoodlums have been reported to take advantage of the early morning traffic to rob drivers in traffic, threatening to smash windows if they don't willingly hand over their valuables.

CMS is a bus stop most visitors to the Island will pass through and it is also very important for a large number of the millions that commute to the Island every day for work or trade.

Last but not least is the fact that the Lagos State Government Governor's official residence at Marina is a stone throw from CMS. It is one of the most historic and popular bus stops in Lagos, you should see it if you are visiting.
