Nigeria's Military Rescues 200 Girls and 93 Women from Sambisa Forest

The Director, Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade stated this on Channels Television and one wonders if the Chibok Girls are amongst them...

Nigeria's army claimed to have rescued almost 300 women and girls on Tuesday after seizing three "terrorist camps" from the radical Islamists of Boko Haram.

The army could not confirm whether any of the 219 schoolgirls abducted from the town of Chibok last April were among the freed captives.

But the apparently successful operation raised hopes that the children who were seized during Boko Haram's most notorious raid might be saved.

The army has mounted a counter-offensive against Boko Haram, seizing back a string of towns and villages from the gunmen and breaking their grip over thousands of square miles of territory in the neighbouring states of Borno and Yobe.

As part of this assault, the army has been trying to clear Boko Haram from Sambisa forest, a remote area near Nigeria's north-eastern frontier that previously served as their stronghold. The Islamists are known to have established camps and held captives inside Sambisa forest.

"Troops have this afternoon captured and destroyed three camps of terrorists inside the Sambisa forest and rescued 200 girls and 93 women," said a statement from Chris Olukolade, the Nigerian defence ministry spokesman.

"It is not yet confirmed if the girls are the Chibok girls," he added. "The freed persons are now being screened and profiled."

Elephant Kills Hunter

I am not sure what my exact thoughts are but if you are not killing animals for food or to protect yourself from possible harm from them or their activities, there is something wrong with it...

A PROFESSIONAL hunter has been crushed to death by a bull elephant while he was out scouting prey in Zimbabwe.

Ian Gibson, 55, was tracking a lion for an American client when he came across the young male elephant in the rugged Zambezi valley, the Telegraph reported.

The client, who had earlier shot dead a leopard, had sat down to rest as Gibson and his trackers approached the bull.

The elephant was reportedly in a musth period, which means it was producing much more testosterone than usual.

According to Africa Geographic it turned suddenly and charged at Gibson. While the veteran hunter was able to get a shot off the elephant kept coming, kneeling on Gibson till he was crushed to death.

10 Things Extraordinary Bosses Give Employees

How Gen. Buhari Can Create 2 Million Jobs from BPO

Nigerian Job Applicants

Unemployment is a huge problem in Nigeria, the last uncontroversial rate from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for 2011 shows 23.9% of the population is unemployed. However, unemployment amongst the youth is much higher.

This dire situation makes it imperative for government and citizens to seek viable solutions to this problem. This article is my contribution in this regard and it focuses on Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) as a means towards generating employment in Nigeria.

According to Wikipedia, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is a subset of outsourcing that involves the contracting of the operations and responsibilities of a specific business process to a third-party service provider.

Statista estimates that the global market size of business process outsourcing in 2014 amounted to 28.5 billion U.S. dollars.

This business has huge potential for creating hundreds of thousands to millions of jobs in Nigeria if the government implements the appropriate policies and enters into partnership with the private sector including foreign investors to create tech hubs.

The kinds of jobs that would be created include: call center agents, data entry officers and analysts. Nigeria's Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector has grown astronomically since the introduction of GSM in 2001 and the country now has 100% telephone penetration according to the National Communications Commission (NCC) meaning that virtually every Nigerian has access to a phone and as technology advances; the skill set of users keeps improving including many educated but unemployed youths.

By creating tech hubs that benefit from tax breaks and stable electricity supply from off-grid Independent Power Plants {IPPs), the government can easily create jobs to reduce the alarming rate of unemployment in Nigeria. If each tech hub has at least 1,000 workstations, employees could work 6-hour shifts meaning one workstation can accommodate 4 employees in a day.

100 tech hubs could be open across the country with Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Enugu, Onitsha Owerri, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna and Jos hosting them in the first phase. This could be expanded to ensure that there is at least 1 tech hub in every state of the federation within a year.

Training would be done to bring job applicants to the standard required to do these jobs. With 4,000 jobs created at every tech hub multiplied by 100, we have 400,000 direct jobs created with about 100,000 related jobs to be created as well from the process of building, maintaining and sustaining the tech hubs. This is an estimate for just the first year, in 4 years, 2 million jobs could be created as the industry expands and services are provided to foreign companies.

This idea is viable and feasible as countries like India and The Philippines have benefitted from BPO, I hope the in-coming government of General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.) will work towards implementing or at least modifying it as it seeks to deliver new jobs to the unemployed which is one of its key campaign promises to Nigerians.

Xiomi Breaks World Record, Sells Over 2 Million Phones in 12 Hours

Xiomi is the the hottest company amongst phone makers at the moment...

China's largest smartphone maker Xiaomi has sold over two million phones in a 12-hour period, setting a Guinness World Record for mobile phone sales in the process, according to media reports on Thursday.

The company said it sold 2.11 million handsets in a 12-hour flash sale held to celebrate its fifth anniversary, the South China Morning Post reported on Thursday.

The half-day bonanza, which brought in 2.08 billion yuan ($335 million) from sales of handsets and other accessories broke the previous record held by Alibaba's Tmall, which sold 1.89 million handsets in November during a 24-hour event.

"This is beyond my imagination," chief executive Lei Jun told reporters at the company's headquarters in Beijing.

The new record has been certified by the official Guinness World Records and examined by auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers, he said.

Xiaomi easily broke their record from the same event last year, which saw them selling 1.3 million smartphones.

Mobile phones and other accessories sold during the 12-hour event, dubbed "Mi Fan Festival", were discounted from Xiaomi's already famously low prices.

BBM Has More Loyal Users than Twitter and WhatsApp

I am not a great fan of BBM but this is good news for BlackBerry which has been struggling in the last 3 years at least...

BlackBerry BBM only behind Facebook Messenger

The comparison of BBM was with 22 Android social and messaging apps, and the user retention rate of BBM was found to be the second highest among them. The only app that defeated BBM was Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Messenger. This tracking was done by Quettra, a mobile analytics provider based in Silicon Valley. Quettra picked up a sample of 75 million Android devices for the survey, which is merely 6% of the number of global devices.

The average user retention rate observed for all the apps after 30 days was found to be 43%, while it was 93% for BBM, says a blog post, citing reports from The Information and CNBC. User loyalty for BBM was observed at 89% after 60 days, while it fell to 82% after 90 days.

The loyalty of BBM users is very anticipated as the app has been downloaded on about 100 million Android devices in the past 18 months of availability via Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Play. The average rating secured by the BBM app is 4.3 on a scale of 5, with 2.8 million users rating it 5 stars out of 4.4 million total user reviews, and this is quite impressive.
BBM Shop popular among users

On the first anniversary of the BBM Shop, the company gave eight milestones, and within just a week, the news of it having a more loyal customer base is a cherry on the cake for fans.

The loyalty of users has strengthened with the introduction of new digital goods made available in the BBM Shop such as stickers. Within a year of availability, BBM users sent 1.87 billion stickers. Users visited the shop, which stocks around 250 items for sale, 1.5 billion times in the first year and had a look at the items for sale. Other than Android, BBM is also available on devices running on iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.

The Rivet One Motorcycle is a result of a collaboration between William Shatner and American Wrench. It's a three-wheeled ride, with exposed rivets on the WWII-inspired bodywork, a comfy-looking padded seat, and a streamlined profile worthy of a future from the past that never quite arrived.

Absolutely stunning design!

Must See: Proof that Your Eyes Deceive You

Cool Idea: A Bed that Fits Into the Roof

Source: +Creative Ideas
Let us rethink the idea of living space. Instead of changing rooms for different activities like living room for lounging and receiving guests, bedroom for sleeping, kitchen for cooking, why don't we have a single room that changes to meet our immediate needs for that moment?

Whilst some might argue this is unnecessary because there is space to demarcate different rooms, I think it is a great way to save on high rent and still enjoy a high quality of life. Hence, this idea is really exciting in my opinion.

Meet Iraq's Rambo

This guy ain't joking...

The men push forward, smartphones flying back and forth as they enlist whoever is closest to take their photo with the swarthy figure at the front of the crowd.

When it's the next man's turn, he approaches with reverence, planting a kiss on the cheek or forehead of the muscle-bound man with the shaved head and jet-black bushy beard. An awkward pose, a quick snap, and it's on to the next acolyte, already in place.

Who is worthy of such attention? A movie star? A chart-topping singer? Nope.

He's Iraq's most famous Shiite militiaman, a fierce warrior whose nom de guerre — Abu Azrael — is an archangel of death in Islam. But the 37-year-old has another nickname: the "Iraqi Rambo."

He is the scourge of Islamic State militants, who last year rampaged across large parts of Iraq and Syria. He taunts and mocks the Sunni extremists on social media, saying he has dispatched them in droves with an arsenal that would satisfy any video-game aficionado: a scoped rifle, hand grenades and, when things get dicey, an ax or sword.

His Facebook pages have garnered well over 300,000 "likes," and his YouTube videos rack up hundreds of thousands — and occasionally millions — of views. (His presence at a recent funeral for a high-ranking militia leader almost derailed the somber proceedings.)

Convalescing in Baghdad after a battlefield injury sustained during the government's latest offensive on the city of Tikrit — "a shell blast threw me off the armored carrier I was on," he explains as he nonchalantly gestures to the cast on his right arm — Abu Azrael consents to a sit-down interview.

It's a tightly choreographed affair, monitored by a media team from his militia, the Imam Ali Brigades, that would make any Hollywood PR firm proud.

"When the Iraqi people came under attack, I decided to leave my work and become a warrior to defend them," he begins, describing himself as a "simple man who wanted to fight the evil of Daesh," the Arabic acronym for Islamic State. And though those on the receiving end of his lethal blows (not to mention taunts) are Sunnis, he rejects accusations that he's encouraging sectarianism.

Like your average action hero, his identity is shrouded in mystery. He acknowledges little more than being a "gentle father" to four daughters and a son.

And what does he do when he's not fighting Islamic State? Is he, as some believe, a university lecturer in Islamic studies, or a fitness instructor who once won a taekwondo tournament, or, as he claims, a simple state employee who moonlights as a muezzin at his local mosque?

And what about his real name? Is it Ayyoub Faleh al-Rubaie or Ayyoub al-Zerjawi, only two of the names he has given to the press?

Abu Azrael won't say, and with his menacing stare (not to mention the serrated military knife at his side), one doesn't like to be pushy.

The secrecy, we're informed, is to protect the fighter and his family from the many threats leveled against him by furious Islamic State supporters, who post gruesome videos of pro-government militiamen killed in battles with the taunting hashtag #Where_Are_You_Abu_Azrael?

He won't confirm news reports that he began fighting in 2003 as part of the Mahdi Army, the militia of the Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr, which fought against U.S. troops during the Iraq war. Neither will he admit fighting in Syria alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He does, however, say that he first took the name Abu Azrael in 2003 because the angel of death meets "an evil person with brutality, and I wanted to meet those terrorists in that way."

The Iraqi government and Shiite militias have long battled a Sunni insurgency that has appeared under different guises (including Al Qaeda in Iraq and the Islamic State in Iraq, the precursor to Islamic State). Whatever the name, pro-government media routinely describe the militants as "terrorists."

Abu Azrael, however, has different words for his enemies: "illa tahin," an abbreviated religious quote that literally translates to "nothing but flour" but means "you will be pulverized." It has become the catchphrase he deploys whenever faced by Islamic State and its supporters.

Abu Azrael decided to join the Imam Ali Brigades, he says, because of the group's "wise and religious leadership" and because he admired its integration of other sects into its ranks, such as anti-militant Sunni tribesmen and Yazidis.

"Other groups were at first reluctant to do so," he says. "Now they have come to follow our way of thinking.."

Man Rescued After Lost at Sea for 66 Days

Amazing story...

Man rescued after 66 days at sea: 'For such a long time, I was so thirsty'

Adrift on the ocean, the mast of his 35-foot sailboat torn away, Louis Jordan caught rainwater in a bucket, scooped up fish that were attracted to the laundry he hung over the side, and fervently prayed to God for help.

After 66 days missing at sea, Jordan was finally rescued by a passing German freighter and brought ashore by the Coast Guard in good condition.

Early Friday, just hours later, the bearded 37-year-old man walked out of the Norfolk hospital where he was reluctantly taken, showing no obvious ill effects.

"We were expecting worse with blisters and severe sunburn and dehydration," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyle McCollum, a member of the helicopter crew who brought Jordan ashore.

Jordan hadn't been heard from since Jan. 23, when he set out on a fishing expedition aboard the single-masted sailboat that had been his home for months at a marina in South Carolina.

The mast of Jordan's boat had broken off in heavy weather, and the vessel appeared to have flipped over multiple times, said Thomas Grenz, captain of the German container ship.

It was unclear how long after leaving port that the boat was damaged, the Coast Guard said.

Jordan was plucked from the Atlantic about 200 miles off the North Carolina coast on Thursday afternoon after furiously waving down the container ship. His boat was upright at the time, Grenz said.

Jordan asked his Coast Guard rescuers to drop him off without seeking medical care, but he was taken to a hospital anyway as a precaution.

He demonstrated a firm handshake and weary-looking blue eyes before declining an interview with The Associated Press on Friday.

In interviews with other news organizations, he described making pancakes out of flour fried in oil, collecting rainwater with a bucket, and using a net to catch fish that would swim in and out of his clothes when he put them over the side to rinse them.

He told WAVY-TV in Norfolk, Virginia,(http://bit.ly/1FpmfUd) that he got by by rationing his water and energy and praying for help.

"Every day I was like, 'Please God, send me some rain, send me some water,'" he said.

Jordan had been living on his 1950s-era boat in Conway, South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach. He told his family he was going into open water to sail and fish, said his mother, Norma Davis.

Grenz, the German captain, said Jordan told him he had set out with about a month's worth of provisions.

Jordan told WAVY that he rationed his water to about a pint a day, but "for such a long a time I was so thirsty."

Jordan told his rescuers that he may have broken a shoulder when the boat was tossed around. McCollum said Jordan had slight bruising on his collarbone but seemed to have no trouble moving his arm and did not appear to be in any pain.
